From the President
Letter to Straits Times Forum with regards to article "Vice raid nabs 160 women"
[Extract]
We refer to the ST article dated August 7 "Vice raid nabs 160 women", which reported that those arrested "included suspects - male and female aged between 17 and 60". We are concern that among those arrested are trafficked victims and should not be criminalised but protected and their traffickers prosecuted.

CEDAW 2011 Experience
[Extract]
"My participation in the CEDAW process as observer and advocate  – giving oral statements, NGO lunch briefings with the CEDAW Committee and the constructive dialogue sessions – was an eye opener and gave me hope on how an international treaty like CEDAW could be used to advocate the rights of migrant women workers and trafficked victims at the national level."

May Day 2011 Message
[Extract]
"As we celebrate May Day 2011, our domestic workers like millions around the world are not recognized as workers like other workers. And even as the International Labour Organization would at its 100th session in Geneva vote positively on an ILO Convention on Decent Work for Domestic Workers, many countries including Singapore may continue to exclude domestic workers from national labour legislation."

President's International Women's Day 2010 Message
[Extract]
“Despite the significant contributions of women to their households and families (both their own and where they work), to communities and countries (both of origin and destination), and to the industries and economies to which they selflessly invest their
time, skills, sweat and tears, these women have yet to enjoy the recognition they have so long deserved.”

President Message on Human Rights Day 2009
[Extract]
"HOME has been for the last five years, a voice for migrants living and working in Singapore whose rights under the Universal Declaration of Human Rights 1948 have been violated by State policies, laws and regulations enacted not on the basis of universal moral standards but on national interests alone, which are essentially pro control, pro business and pro talent. The economic miracle of Singapore does not rest on just these policies but also on the sweat and sacrifice of a migrant workforce..."

HOME Annual Report for 2009
[Extract]
"Even as we were suffering, the global economic crises hit the migrant and local workforce. For migrant workers, losing work means losing everything. They were in a financially suicidal situation as they were compelled to return home not only penniless but heavily indebted. Our men's helpdesk and shelter staff at Little India were tending to the hundreds who came for housing, food and assistance in their distress. The troubles seem like a never ending story, as we struggled in a battle to survive for our beneficiaries. So it is with a sense of relief and disbelief that we ended this year with a surplus of..."
