Since 1998, she has been working for the alleviation of the plight of foreign workers in Singapore. She set up shelters for men and women who are in need of a safe haven during the course of investigations and resolution of their disputes. A soup kitchen has also been initiated to provide free meals to destitute foreign workers who have been ‘out of work’. She set up a team of social workers, helpdesk counsellors to reach out to victims of exploitation and injustice. For those who need to enhance their skills and employability she set up and supported centres of skills training.
Honors /Awards
In 2003, she received from President of the Philippines Gloria Macapagal Arroyo the Banaag Award for her service to overseas Filipinos in Singapore. In the year 2005, she was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize for the 1000 Peace Women project. She has also received an award of appreciation from the Thai embassy on the occasion of the birthday of the Thai monarch in the year 2007.
