Since 2005, HOME has been engaging the student population to work on community service projects with our beneficiaries. These projects provide opportunities for social integration and for community awareness building on the challenges faced by migrant workers in Singapore. Moreover the exposure of students to our work for human rights increases the numbers of champions for social justice in a community of divide.
United World College, NUS High, St. Joseph's Institution, St. Joseph's International, Singapore American School, Anglo Chinese Independent School, Raffles Girls' School, Raffles Junior College, Catholic Junior College, Pioneer Junior College, Temasek Junior College, Tampines Junior College, NUS, SMU, Ngee Ann Polytechnic, Nanyang Polytechnic are among some of the educational institutions who have had community service projects with HOME.
This is a Community Service Project (CSP) initiated by Singapore Management University (SMU) students, Sherman and Sentil, to instil in Singaporeans a culture of genuine gratitude and appreciation for domestic helpers. Project Made with Love aims to make every household a "Great Workplace" for domestic workers. Ultimately, Project Made with Love's vision is "People-Centredness", ensuring that the welfare of domestic workers is essential for a cohesive and harmonious environment in Singapore.
The project will be in two stages:
Pledge Collection Drive
The team intends to carry out pledge collection drives targeted towards Singaporeans and will work with 40 secondary school students from St. Joseph's Institution. Students will reach out to their networks of families, friends and fellow students and ask them to sign pledges if they wish to support the values of fair and gracious treatment for domestic helpers.
In addition, pledge signatories can also write down any messages on these pledge forms which will be showcased.
A smaller-scale pledge drive will also be held in SMU for students. Our aim is 1000 pledges.
An Appreciation Showcase
In the second phase of Project Made with Love, photographs, pledges and messages from employers will be printed and displayed on at one of the National Library Board's (NLB) regional libraries to display the number of pledges collected. By holding project Made with Love’s showcase at a regional library, their community outreach program will be able to reach the widest possible audience.
Team Step Up has chosen to do a CSP with HOME to teach Mandarin to migrant domestic workers to pave the way to greater employment opportunities and greater social integration.
The team comprising Li Nan, Denise Lum Shu Mei, Lydia Pan She Teng, Neoh Yew Kiat, Nikita Sinhal, Ting Wen Zhong and Walter Lim Yong Tat hopes to educate, integrate and empower domestic workers through Mandarin Classes that are enriching and engaging.
In four lessons migrant domestics would be able to converse simple Mandarin, sing Mandarin pops and make a Mandarin speech. Some 30 migrant women from the Philippines, Myanmar, India and Indonesia would be given this opportunity to learn from these creative young Singaporeans from SMU.
