Micah’s Story: Balancing Duty to Family and The Call to Create — Cultivating A Vibrant Creative Third Space
For my portrait, I wore one of my my own creations: a flower dress with headdress and props inspired by Gardens by the Bay.

My real name is Cholita Neri. I am 47 years old, and I have been working in Singapore for almost 15 years.
As the eldest in my family, I have always felt that it is my duty and responsibility to take care of my family, especially my parents’ health and my brother’s education. I decided to work abroad to help improve my family’s situation, as both my parents are facing health problems. Working in another country is not easy. You may feel lonely, you will miss your loved ones, and sometimes you will get homesick.
To cope with this, I keep myself busy and continue to pick up new skills. I have taken classes in entrepreneurship, learnt to play the guitar and bake, as well as learnt the art of flower arrangement and jewellery making. I have also joined various pageants such as Miss Summerlook, Miss Dreamgirls, Miss Filipina, Miss Nobel Life, and even participated in Kaugnay’s Trashion Show, where contestants have to turn recycled materials into fashion pieces.
My off days have become extraordinary. They may be tiring, but they are also fun and meaningful. I never forget my spiritual life, and I always attend church before joining any activities or events.
In 2014, I created my own group called Fantasy Shoot. This community advocates goodwill and friendship among Filipinos in Singapore, alongside individuals from other nationalities. It provides a space for those with a passion for digital art photography, dance, and modelling.
When working abroad, health issues can quickly become a major life crisis. A year ago, I noticed a lump on the right side of my breast. It was swollen and painful, and I panicked. Thankfully, it was not cancerous, and my employer agreed to pay for my operation. I am thankful for their understanding and support.
Living a simple life with my family is a blessing. Happiness, contentment, and appreciation for what we have are what truly matter. For me, true success lies in having a loving and supportive family, and an employer who is kind.
My contract is ending soon, and I have decided to return to the Philippines to be with my family. I will always carry with me the unforgettable memories and meaningful experiences I gained while working in Singapore. They will forever remain in my heart.
