Hunger Amid Plenty: Food Deprivation and Migrant Domestic Workers
A recent article shed light on the issues migrant domestic workers (MDWs) face regarding food insecurity. Many MDWs shared troubling accounts of being provided insufficient food and how food was sometimes used as a form of control or even punishment.
We also asked MDWs at our shelter to describe their experiences with food at their employers' homes. They described having to eat leftovers and food of little nutritional value, or even food that went against their religious beliefs. Many expressed the frustration of preparing delicious meals for their employers’ families but being denied the opportunity to partake in them. To cope, they often had to use their own money to buy food to supplement their meagre diets. Sadly, some were even scolded when they requested more food.
